Brentford 3-1 Burnley: Red-hot Thiago at the double in thrilling finish

Brentford moved up to eighth in the Premier League table after three late goals helped them see off the challenge of Burnley.

Igor Thiago netted a late double as Brentford beat Burnley 3-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium, where all four goals were scored in 11 frantic minutes.

Having missed a last-gasp penalty against Brighton last week, Thiago was once again in the thick of the action in a thrilling conclusion to Saturday's Premier League match.

Following a low-key first half, Thiago thought he had given Brentford the lead five minutes after the restart, only to see his effort chalked off for offside.

Yet Thiago broke the deadlock in the 81st minute, sparking a remarkable finale.

After being played through by Mikkel Damsgaard, Dango Ouattara was taken down in the box by Axel Tuanzebe, allowing Thiago to step up and coolly dispatch the resulting spot-kick.

However, Burnley were awarded a penalty of their own four minutes later when Jaidon Anthony went to ground, with Zian Flemming slotting into the bottom-right corner.

But just 72 seconds later, a dangerous cross into the box from Jordan Henderson was not dealt with by Burnley, allowing Thiago to thump home from close range.

And the three points were wrapped up in the second minute of stoppage time through Ouattara, who rode Maxime Esteve's challenge before finishing past Martin Dubravka.

Data Debrief: Terrific Thiago continues flying form

Only Manchester City's Erling Haaland had scored more goals than Thiago, but Brentford's in-form striker closed the gap at the summit of the Premier League scoring charts with his third top-flight double of 2025-26.

Indeed, Thiago netted his 10th and 11th top-flight goals of the season, the earliest in terms of matches (13) a Brentford player has reached double figures in a single campaign in the competition, and you would expect him to score a lot more.

After struggling in the first half, Brentford found their groove and were deserving of their victory, ending the contest with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.75 from their 14 shots to Burnley's 0.94 from their six attempts, coming after the Bees managed an xG of just 0.52 in the first 45 minutes.

Brentford have now won three consecutive Premier League home games for the first time since December 2024 (five in a row), netting three goals in each match, with those results temporarily moving them up to eighth in the table.
