Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored plenty of important goals for Manchester United, but he almost joined Wolves before his move to Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that Wolves were also interested in signing him before he joined Manchester United in 1996.

The Norwegian striker transferred from Molde to United ahead of the 1996-97 season, and went on to become a legendary player at Old Trafford.

His most memorable moment came in the 1999 Champions League final, when he scored a last-minute winner against Bayern Munich at Camp Nou.

Solskjaer scored 91 goals and provided 31 assists in 235 Premier League games for United and started just 151 of those matches.

He won six league titles under Sir Alex Ferguson, along with two FA Cups and Community Shields to go with their Champions League triumph.

When speaking in an interview with the BBC, Solskjaer explained how he could have joined second-tier Wolves after a World Cup qualifier for Norway against Azerbaijan.

"So, for Norway, this is probably one of the most important games in my career. We played Norway against Azerbaijan and I scored two very good goals," said Solskjaer.

"Coincidentally, Jim Ryan – the [United] assistant manager – was watching Ronny Johnsen, who we signed. He was sitting next to Mark McGhee, who at that time was Wolverhampton manager, chatting as they do.

"Mark McGhee is looking for a centre-forward, Jim Ryan's watching the game and I score two goals.

"So he thinks, 'OK, Wolverhampton will probably sign this boy'. He rang Sir Alex [Ferguson] that night and said: 'I think I found one and he won't be expensive.

"It's a cheap one, but we've got to be quick because Wolverhampton are also signing a centre-forward.' It went really, really fast."

Solskjaer scored on his Premier League debut, coming on as a substitute to rescue a 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers in United's third game of the season.

He also scored four goals in one game against Nottingham Forest, once again coming off the bench to help the Red Devils win 8-1 in February 1999.
