Championship: Sheff Utd egde Leicester in five-goal thriller as Gelhardt late show downs Stoke

Sheffield United made it three wins from three in the Championship, while Stoke City missed the chance to close the gap to Coventry City.

Sheffield United catapulted themselves out of the Championship relegation zone but were forced to survive a second-half revival from Leicester City to earn a 3-2 victory.

The Blades had scored three goals inside the opening 32 minutes at the King Power Stadium, but were forced to hang on in the closing stages to seal an important three points.

Thomas Cannon fired the Blades into a second-minute lead, picking out the bottom-left corner to capitalise on some poor Leicester defending as they failed to clear their lines.

And it went from bad to worse for the hosts two minutes later when Callum O'Hare's volley took the slightest of touches from Jairo Riedewald and found its way into the net.

Chris Wilder's team had seemingly put the result beyond doubt in the 32nd minute when Harrison Burrows' corner was cleared only as far as Sydie Peck, who struck a fine volley past Asmir Begovic.

But hopes of an unlikely Foxes comeback were ignited eight minutes after the restart when Abdul Fatawu's cross to the back post was nodded home by Stephy Mavididi.

And Jordan James' swerving strike rippled the net seven minutes from time to put the pressure on the Blades, who were able to get themselves over the line.

Elsewhere in the second tier, Joe Gelhardt netted a 90th-minute winner for Hull City as they came from behind to beat second-placed Stoke City 2-1 at bet365 Stadium.

Stoke knew a win would close the gap to leaders Coventry City to seven points ahead of the Sky Blues' clash with Charlton Athletic, but they were unable to take that chance.

Mark Robins' side hit the front in the 17th minute when the in-form Sorba Thomas crashed a stunning volley in at Ivor Pandur's near post from just inside the penalty area.

But the Potters were unable to build on their momentum and were pegged back two minutes after the break when Semi Ajayi finished from close range with a simple header before Gelhardt secured all three points.

Meanwhile, at Fratton Park, Anis Mehmeti's 17th-minute header was enough to move Bristol City temporarily up to fourth as they downed lowly Portsmouth 1-0.

Data Debrief: O'Hare helps Wilder end Foxes hoodoo

Coming into this game, Wilder had lost all three of his managerial league games against Leicester, all in the Premier League from August 2019 to December 2020, only facing Liverpool (six), Manchester City (five), and Southampton (five) more without ever avoiding defeat in his career as a manager in the top four tiers.

But his revitalised Blades team certainly delivered here, registering back-to-back away league wins for the first time since March last season, though they ended the match with an expected goals (xG) total of 0.92 from 13 shots to Leicester's 1.04 from their 15 attempts.

And O'Hare was key to the Blades' triumph with his two assists. He has set up his team-mates six times in the Championship this year, a total only bettered by Ryan Giles (seven), while he also ended the game with team-high totals for shots (three), touches in the opposition box (four) and chances created (four).
