Sunderland 3-2 Bournemouth: Brobbey completes comeback after Adams' wondergoal
Tyler Adams scored one of the goals of the season for Bournemouth, but it proved academic after an inspired Sunderland comeback on Saturday.
Brian Brobbey was the hero as Sunderland produced an inspired turnaround to stun 10-man Bournemouth 3-2 in a five-goal Premier League thriller, despite Tyler Adams' wondergoal at the Stadium of Light.
The Cherries made a flying start to lead 2-0 inside the opening quarter of an hour.
Amine Adli broke the deadlock with his first Bournemouth goal, tucking in the rebound after Robin Roefs diverted Evanilson's initial close-range attempt onto the post.
Adams then produced a sublime 45-yard effort to lob a helpless Roefs from the edge of the centre-circle, though Enzo Le Fee's penalty reduced the deficit in the 30th minute.
Bertrand Traore levelled when he drilled home 51 seconds into the second half, before Bournemouth were denied a third as Evanilson turned in a deflected cross from an offside position.
Substitute Brobbey then completed the turnaround by heading in what proved to be the winner 21 minutes from time, though Regis Le Bris' side survived a late scare when Marcus Tavernier rattled the crossbar.
There was still more late drama, however, as Lewis Cook was sent off for violent conduct in stoppage time after elbowing Noah Sadiki.
Sunderland held out for all three points, continuing their unbeaten start at home to move fourth in the Premier League table. Bournemouth, meanwhile, drop to ninth, with their winless streak extending to four games.
Data Debrief: Adams finds his range
Sunderland came from two or more goals down to win a Premier League game for the first time, achieving the feat at the 188th such attempt.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth were beaten in a top-flight match during which they had led by two or more goals for the first time since a 3-2 defeat at Arsenal in March 2023.
Although the Cherries certainly made their mark on the contest, with Adams scoring one of the goals of the season.
From 43.3 metres out, it was the longest-range Premier League goal since Moises Caicedo's effort against Bournemouth in May 2024 (50.5 metres), while only Philip Billing (43.8 metres against Burnley in October 2023) has scored a goal for the Cherries from further out in the competition.
