Sheffield Wednesday are 27 points adrift of safety in the Championship table, with the Owls' latest punishment dropping them to -10 points.

Sheffield Wednesday have had a further six points deducted by the English Football League (EFL) over repeated failures to pay staff earlier this year.

Wednesday were hit with an automatic 12-point deduction when they entered administration in October, following fan protests against Deijphon Chansiri's ownership of the club.

They were already 21 points adrift of 21st-placed Swansea City in the Championship table and virtually assured of relegation to League One, and that gap stretched to 27 on Monday.

Wednesday were charged with failing to pay players and other staff in March, May and June of this year, while they were also unable to make other required payments to HM Revenue & Customs.

Chansiri has also been handed a ban by the EFL, which said an independent commission had ratified a club-to-association agreement on the penalties.

An EFL statement said: "Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to payment obligations, with the club's former owner, Mr Dejphon Chansiri, prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL club for a period of three years.

"The sanctions on both the club and Mr Chansiri can be confirmed after the parties reached an agreement on the appropriate sanction which was subsequently ratified by the chair of the appointed independent disciplinary commission."

Wednesday were beaten 3-2 by Preston North End on Saturday, suffering their fourth defeat in a row, with trips to Blackburn Rovers and Watford next up for Henrik Pedersen's team.
