Euro 2024: FotMob Team of the Round

Del

Few would’ve thought that Türkiye would be one of the nations with the most players in FotMob’s first Team of the Round for Euro 2024 (alongside Spain) but this summer tournament’s has been full of surprises so far. Who else made the cut alongside that duo though? Read on to find out.

Goalkeeper: Unai Simón

The Spain shot-stopper was awfully busy in their 3-0 win over Croatia. The game wasn’t quite as straightforward as the scoreline suggests.

The Athletic Club goalkeeper made five saves on Saturday afternoon, one of which was a penalty, while facing shots with an Expected Goals on Target value of 2.4. Without him, questions are being asked of the Spanish defensive set-up. However, because of his performance papering over the cracks, people are talking about them as tournament favourites.

Right-Back: Mert Müldür

The 25-year-old opened the scoring for the Turks in their 3-1 win over Georgia on Tuesday with one of the three shots the Fenerbahçe defender had on the night – and what a goal it was! He also carved out an opportunity for a teammate while winning 100% of his tackles and four the seven duels he was involved in. Considering he was up against the maverick Kvicha Kvaratskhelia for large periods of the game, he more than held his own.

Centre-Back: Samet Akaydin

The Panathinaikos centre-back earned himself an 8.3 FotMob rating for his showing against Georgia. The Türkiye defender was almost flawless, completing 89% of his passes, winning two of his three ground duels and going five for five in aerial duels. The 30-year-old also won 100% of his tackles, one of which was a last man tackle that had to be perfect, as well as clearing the ball off the line in the 3-1 win.

Centre-Back: Alessandro Bastoni

Bastoni makes it into the FotMob XI after an impressive showing against Albania. The Inter centre-back completed 96% of the 114 passes he attempted while also winning 75% of his ground duels. He also netted the equaliser for Luciano Spalletti’s men, giving them the platform needed to go on and pick up an important three points.

Left-Back: Michel Aebischer

The Bologna player, who impressed at club level this season, caught the eye for Switzerland in their 3-1 win over Hungary. The 27-year-old, playing as a left wing-back for the Swiss, scored, with what was at the time a goal of the tournament contender, and assisted in a player of the match performance. He carved out two chances, completed 87% of his passes, won 100% of his tackles, and came out on top in four of his six duels.

Midfield: Christian Eriksen

It was a real feel good moment when Eriksen fired home Denmark’s opener against Slovenia. The 32-year-old collapsed at the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, suffering cardiac arrest on the pitch against Finland. He marked his return to the tournament with a player of the match display. To go alongside his goal, the Manchester United midfield also created the highest number of chances (seven) and had five shots as the Danes had to settle for a draw in their opener.

Midfield: Fabián Ruiz

The Paris Saint-Germain maestro was given a FotMob rating of 8.8 for his display against Croatia in Spain’s 3-0 win. The 28-year-old scored and assisted while also finding a teammate with 91% of his attempted passes. Ruiz completed two of his three dribbles and played seven passes into the final third. He also won 100% of his tackles and 80% of his duels to round off an all action showing.

Midfield: Cody Gakpo

Gakpo was a revelation for the Dutch in their late victory over Poland. The Liverpool attacker scored the equaliser but it was his all-round showing that catapulted him into this XI. He completed all five of his dribbles while also being fouled on four occasions, the highest number of anyone on the pitch. He carved out three chances while also winning 15 of his 18 duels.

Attack: Ivan Schranz

Schranz was the match-winner for Slovakia as they picked up a shock 1-0 win over Belgium to kick off their Euro 2024. The 30-year-old reacted quickest to fire home from a narrow angle after Koen Casteels could only parry the ball out. The forward also created three chances on the day as he showed his value to the side as a difference maker.

Attack: Kai Havertz

Havertz was able to carry his club form over into the Euros. The Arsenal attacker was instrumental for Germany in their 5-1 win over Scotland. The versatile attacker scored and assisted in the victory while also winning 100% of his aerial duels, giving Julian Nagelsmann’s side the ability to go long and retain possession. He was well worth his 8.5 FotMob rating.

Attack: Denis Drăguș

One goal, one chance created, six attempted dribbles and 15 duel attempts. Drăguș was a busy man for Romania in their 3-0 win over Ukraine. The 24-year-old completed the most dribbles (four) and was a constant nuisance for Romania throughout.
