The Netherlands are looking to extend their lead at the top of Group G, but Memphis Depay could be set to miss out on their upcoming games.

The Netherlands’ all-time top scorer Memphis Depay missed the start of international duty after reporting his passport stolen in Brazil, where he plays for Corinthians.

Depay was due to travel to the Netherlands on Sunday but was unable to make the trip. Ronald Koeman’s squad face World Cup qualifiers against Malta on Thursday and Finland on Sunday.

The Dutchman has recorded 26 appearances for Corinthians in the Brazilian Serie A since arriving last term, contributing to 15 goals (11 goals and four assists).

Depay became the Netherlands’ record scorer last month with 52 goals in 104 games, moving past Robin van Persie. The Dutch top Group G on goal difference with a game in hand.

The KNVB said Depay is “doing everything he can” to join the team “as soon as possible.”

The Netherlands ran out 3-2 winners against Lithuania last time out, after being held to a 1-1 draw by Poland.

Koeman added: “This is unfortunate, primarily for Memphis, but also for us. You naturally want to start with a full squad. We hope he can travel to training camp as soon as possible.”
