Bayer Leverkusen failed to get back to winning ways in the Bundesliga after they lost 2-0 to early strugglers Augsburg at WWK Arena.

Augsburg caused a shock at WWK Arena after they beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 in the Bundesliga.

First-half goals from Dimitrios Giannoulis and Anton Kade were enough for the hosts to claim all three points, while back-to-back league defeats for Leverkusen leave them 14 points behind Bayern Munich.

Augsburg needed just six minutes to take the lead as Giannoulis ran onto a brilliant pass from Keven Schlotterbeck before slotting the ball past Mark Flekken.

Giannoulis then turned provider shortly before the half-hour mark when Augsburg doubled their advantage. His cross from the left wing was headed back across goal by Kade, who left the goalkeeper with little chance of making a save.

Leverkusen pushed hard to halve the deficit and struck the woodwork four times in the process. Patrik Schick first hit the frame of the goal before the break, while Eliesse Ben Seghir and Nathan Tella also struck the crossbar and post respectively in the second half.

Augsburg remained a threat on the counter-attack as Leverkusen's increased attacking intent opened up the match, but they did not need a third goal as they secured their second win in three games.

Data Debrief: Kade rewarded for doing the dirty work

Leverkusen huffed and puffed for a way back into the game, but Augsburg more than held their own. They produced 1.28 expected goals (xG) from 13 shots to Leverkusen's 1.6 from 20 attempts.

Kade's goal gave Augsburg a comfortable cushion, and the 21-year-old put in a big shift for his side. He recorded the most shots for Augsburg (four), most touches in the box (eight), won the most aerial duels (four), regained possession six times and created the second-most chances (two).

Augsburg have won back-to-back home games in the league for the first time since October 2024, while Leverkusen have lost consecutive Bundesliga games for the first time since January-February 2023.
