Palmeiras came out on top against rivals Botafogo, earning a 1-0 victory in extra time to make it to the last eight of the Club World Cup.

Palmeiras head coach Abel Ferreira insisted his side will continue to "fight until the end for our dream" after booking their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.

Palmeiras faced Botafogo in an all-Brazilian final on Saturday and ran out 1-0 winners after extra time to make it through to the last eight.

Ferreira's side dominated the first half without creating anything of note, but that changed after the break, with Estevao Willian and Mauricio both forcing smart saves out of Botafogo goalkeeper John.

With the teams still goalless after 90 minutes, John was called into action again early in extra time to deny Richard Rios' piledriver, though he could do nothing to keep out Paulinho's low curler in the 100th minute.

Gustavo Gomez was then sent off in the 116th minute for a second bookable offence, but Palmeiras stood firm against Botafogo's late threat.

"Never give up, never give in. All the time, we work for this," Ferreira said. "I spoke with the players, if we play like in training, for sure, the game will be better than what we did in the last game.

"I would like to say thank you to my players for all their efforts. We had an amazing game. I think in all 90 minutes, plus extra time, we did very well. When we needed to suffer, we suffered together with one player less.

"We deserve it, because we work a lot. Now we are there, and we will fight until the end for our dream. So, keep going like this."

There were no shots on target in the first half between Palmeiras and Botafogo, the second match at this year's Club World Cup to not feature a shot on target before half-time, with both involving Palmeiras (also vs. Al Ahly).

However, Paulinho is the second player to score in multiple substitute appearances in this year's tournament, joining Wallace Yan of Flamengo.

"A lot of emotions... a really tough game against a really competitive team," Paulinho said.

"I knew the game would cool down a little bit in extra time, that we would have to change the flow of the game. I had this opportunity, and this gives me even more confidence.

"I'm going through a difficult moment with my injury. I still feel the pain, but it's another step in the Club World Cup."

Palmeiras will face Chelsea in the quarter-finals on Friday.
