Premier League Predictions: Chelsea

Chelsea head into the 2023/24 campaign as a big unknown. After a disappointing season last time out, coupled with a mass exodus of players this summer and glaring gaps in the squad yet to be addressed, there’s uncertainty over what to expect from the Blues this time out. Yet, despite all of this, writing them off would be naive.
How the team did last season
To say the 2022/23 season didn’t go to plan would be a massive understatement. The Blues went big during the summer transfer window, the first of the Todd Boehly era, spending over £250million to bring in the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Kouliably, Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Thomas Tuchel was removed from his position as manager just six games into the campaign having picked up 10 points. Losses to Leeds United and Southampton during that period didn’t help his case to remain in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea then raided Brighton to bring in Graham Potter and a number of his backroom staff. He was unbeaten in his first five Premier League matches before going winless in the next five games. That erratic form continued until he was sacked in early April.
Frank Lampard saw out the season as interim boss, winning just one of his nine games in charge at the helm.
In the end, the Blues managed a 12th place finish having racked up just 44 points. They won just 11 of their 38 matches in the English top-flight and ended the campaign with a negative goal difference.
Even the January signings of Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernández, Noni Madueke and Benoît Badiashile couldn’t get them back on track.
Everyone struggled in the team. Kai Havertz finished as the club’s top scorer in the league with just seven goals to his name. To really hammer home how awful the season was, 38-year-old Thiago Silva finished with the highest FotMob average (7.23).

What has happened during the summer?
After being linked with a host of managers, the Blues finally settled on former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino. The 51-year-old had been out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in July 2022.
He will be looking to give Chelsea a clear identity, just as he did while at Spurs, but he’s had a tricky start to life at Stamford Bridge having lost a number of players this summer.
For starters, Kai Havertz joined Arsenal, Mason Mount moved to Manchester United, and Mateo Kovačić made the switch to Manchester City.
After just one year with the club, Kalidou Koulibaly left for a loss to join the exodus of players moving to Saudi Arabia along with Édouard Mendy and N’Golo Kante. Christian Pulisic signed with AC Milan while Aubameyang returned to France, joining Marseille. Despite being linked with Barcelona for the best part of 12 months, Cesar Azpilicueta left on a free to join Atlético Madrid.
More players are expected to depart before the new campaign gets underway.
Chelsea have lost a lot of experience this summer and they are yet to really replace it.
Christopher Nkunku joined from RB Leipzig while Nicolas Jackson made the move from Villarreal. Both have looked good in pre-season along with Angelo, an 18-year-old signing from Santos this summer.
They have so far failed in their pursuit of Moises Caicedo, though it feels like a matter of when and not if the Blues will strike a deal with Brighton.

What they should be aiming for next season?
After such an outlay over the previous 12 months, a European place needs to be viewed as a bare minimum, doesn’t it? Obviously, a Champions League spot is going to be the aim but it might not be possible this season unless everyone falls into place and there’s a huge slice of luck for Pochettino and his players. If they don’t get it, other teams are much further along with their project and have a settled squad, which gives them an advantage.
