Real Madrid seemed set to stay top of LaLiga, only for late heroics from Ronald Araujo to inspire Barcelona past Girona in a Catalan derby.

Ronald Araujo delivered a 93rd-minute winner as Barcelona surged to the top of LaLiga with a last-gasp 2-1 win over Girona.

Barcelona appeared set to miss out on taking top spot from Real Madrid, who face Getafe on Sunday, with frustrations boiling over as the Blaugrana looked to be dropping points.

Home boss Hansi Flick was dismissed for apparent dissent in the dying embers, only for Araujo to link-up with Frenkie de Jong and fire past Paulo Gazzaniga to snatch victory in the third minute of stoppage time.

Pedri had earlier fired the reigning Spanish champions into a 13th-minute lead, exchanging well with Lamine Yamal before picking out the bottom corner with a left-footed drive.

Axel Witsel rifled Girona level just seven minutes later, however, when the Belgium midfielder converted with an acrobatic finish after captain Arnau Martinez had kept an away corner alive.

Vladyslav Vanat and Portu passed up chances soon after to send Girona ahead, while Marcus Rashford and Fermin Lopez were denied by the woodwork at the other end either side of half-time.

Pau Cubarsi then thought he had found a decisive finish just past the hour, though his strike was ruled out for offside before Araujo's late heroics sparked celebratory scenes from the Barcelona bench.

Data Debrief: Free-scoring Barcelona find a way

Barcelona have now scored in each of their last 46 matches in all competitions (129 goals), marking their best run in history after surpassing 45 in a row between November 1942 and February 1944 (139 goals).

Flick's side only narrowly edged Girona on expected goals (xG), though, accumulating 1.86 to their visitors' 1.84.

It was all down to Araujo's late moment of brilliance as Barcelona beat Girona for three consecutive matches for the first time in LaLiga history.
