Benjamin Sesko: Set to show his future suitors what they’re missing at Euro 2024

Benjamin Šeško is seen by some as the next Erling Haaland. Like the Manchester City striker, Šeško has come through the Red Bull pipeline. He is strong and lightning quick. Both centre forwards also know where the goal is, scoring a combined 56 times last season. Only one, however, will be at Euro 2024 – and it’s not Haaland.

Šeško will spearhead Slovenia’s attack in Germany this summer with the 21-year-old the subject of much transfer speculation right now. Arsenal and Chelsea have both been linked with the striker, but he has chosen to stay at RB Leipzig, for now, signing a new contract with the Bundesliga club.

With this in mind, Euro 2024 could provide Šeško with a platform to reach the next level in his career. The young forward might not be making the move to the Premier League this summer, but he could still catch the eye of the elite by firing Slovenia into the knockout rounds of a major tournament for the first time.

Technically and physically, Šeško ticks all the boxes needed for the 21-year-old to one day become one of the best centre forwards in the world. There’s a reason Premier League big boys like Arsenal and Chelsea are looking closely at Šeško who has so far followed the precedent set by Haaland in not rushing his jump to the top level.

Indeed, Šeško is an imposing figure who frequently uses his height to attack crosses into the box. He is in the 60th percentile for aerials won per 90 minutes, but that number would surely be more impressive if RB Leipzig were more willing to sling the ball into the area. For Slovenia, Šeško will be a consistent threat in the air.

His pace is another attribute which makes him special. While Slovenia will look to sit deep and stay compact in most of their matches at Euro 2024, they are a dynamic attacking force when breaking from the back with Šeško – along with strike partner Andraž Šporar – quick to make a run in behind.

Whether it’s as a lone striker or as part of a front two, Šeško is capable of making the difference in front of goal. He is a traditional centre forward in the sense that his entire game is geared towards putting the ball in the back of the net, but his Red Bull upbringing means he is very much aligned with the principles of the modern game.

Instinctively, Šeško knows which areas to occupy in the opposition penalty box. He is strong with both feet, can finish one-on-one situations and even has the ability to find the back of the net from distance. Šeško isn’t always the most composed in the final third – see his erratic performance against Real Madrid in this season’s Champions League – but the potential is clearly there.

Šeško has probably made a wise decision by remaining at RB Leipzig for at least another season. While the 21-year-old is highly-rated by the Bundesliga club and seen as their next young superstar to one day be sold for big money, he only started 17 league matches last season. Loïs Openda was instead seen as RB Leipzig’s most dependable striker.

It wasn’t until the second half of the campaign that Šeško started to find his feet following a transfer from Red Bull Salzburg the summer before. There is much more for him to achieve in the Bundesliga for his current club before moving on to the Premier League or another ‘Big Five’ league.

Drawn in Group C at Euro 2024 along with England, Šeško will fancy his chances of exposing a vulnerable Three Lions defence. Gareth Southgate has some of the tournament’s best attackers to choose from, but doesn’t have the same strength at the back with Lewis Dunk, Marc Guehi, and Ezri Konsa all part of the squad. Šeško will test them.

There are breakout stars at every major tournament – see Enzo Fernández, Cody Gakpo and Azzedine Ounahi at the 2022 World Cup – and Šeško could be one at Euro 2024. Slovenia might not be contenders to go the distance in Germany this summer, but their 21-year-old centre forward could help them make an impact nonetheless.
