Flamengo 2-4 Bayern Munich: Kane at the double in Club World Cup thriller

Jaa

Bayern Munich will face Paris Saint-Germain in a mouthwatering Club World Cup quarter-final, after the Bundesliga champions beat Flamengo.

Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich saw off Flamengo 4-2 to set up a heavyweight clash with Paris Saint-Germain at the Club World Cup.

Kane netted the final goal of a thrilling contest at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday, as Bayern fended off their Brazilian opponents.

It looked set to be a serene afternoon for Bayern in Florida when Kane arrowed in a left-footed strike in off the post to make it 2-0 to Vincent Kompany's team in the ninth minute.

Erick Pulgar, who later had to be taken off on a stretcher, had given Bayern the lead with an own goal six minutes in.

Yet Flamengo responded brightly, and after Manuel Neuer made a superb save to deny Luiz Araujo, captain Gerson lashed in an unstoppable drive in the 33rd minute.

Leon Goretzka netted with an equally brilliant long-range effort eight minutes later, but Bayern's lead was cut again early in the second half.

Michael Olise handled in the area, and former Arsenal midfielder Jorginho coolly dispatched the resulting penalty.

Kane, though, restored Bayern's two-goal cushion, guiding a crisp finish into the bottom-right corner to see the Bundesliga champions into the quarter-finals.

Data Debrief: Kane's grand arrival

Bayern plundered 12 goals in the group stage, yet Kane only netted one of those. However, the England captain arrived on the stage in spectacular fashion to ensure Flamengo's 11-match unbeaten streak came to an end – they had conceded only five goals in that run.

Kane, who made his way off in second-half stoppage time, scored from both of his attempts, which came with a combined expected goals (xG) value of just 0.31, displaying the accuracy of his finishing.

Bayern finished with eight shots, which is one more than Flamengo had conceded across their three group matches combined. However, Filipe Luis' team may consider themselves unfortunate, having accumulated 1.37 xG to Bayern's 0.91. That being said, Jorginho's penalty accounted for 0.79 of that figure.
