Maguire warns Man Utd not to get carried away after long-awaited Anfield win

Manchester United notched their first Premier League win over Liverpool at Anfield since 2016, but Harry Maguire remained level-headed.

Manchester United match-winner Harry Maguire insisted his team-mates must not get carried away by their sensational 2-1 victory away to Liverpool on Sunday.

Maguire popped up with the deciding moment in the 84th minute, rising highest to meet Bruno Fernandes' brilliant cross with a fine header past Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Ruben Amorim's team had stunned Anfield into silence with just 62 seconds on the clock when Bryan Mbeumo stole in behind Virgil van Dijk before finishing into the net.

Liverpool probed for an equaliser and got their rewards through Cody Gakpo, who had already hit the woodwork three times before finally finding a way past Senne Lammens.

However, it was to be the Red Devils' day when Maguire nodded home the winner, consigning the Premier League champions to their fourth straight defeat in all competitions.

"We won't get carried away because we can't afford that as a club, we will use it as motivation," Maguire told Sky Sports.

"In this club, it will mean a lot this week, and then we have Brighton at home next week. So we have to remain calm-headed."

United have won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since their final two games of the 2023-24 season and their opening game of the 2024-25 campaign.

Indeed, they also won their first Premier League away game against Liverpool since January 2016, ending a run of nine league games without victory at Anfield (D5 L4).

They rode their luck at times, with Liverpool generating an expected goals (xG) total of 2.76 from their 19 attempts to United's 1.26 from their 12 shots.

But no matter their method of victory, Maguire was keen to revel in his heroics at a ground he has often been on the losing side at during his career with the Red Devils.

"It means everything. They had had the better of us over the last few years and it's not been good for our club," Maguire added.

"We have not given our fans enough days like today, so it has been a long time coming, coming to this ground and picking up three points.

"It is not just three points to the club and to the boys. I have been coming to this ground for seven years now and to not get three points have been tough.

"It's for the fans and I hope they had a great night tonight.

"It is nice to have one over Liverpool. Football is all about memories and making special memories. I am sure all the fans will go home with memories, we will all go home happy."

Fernandes, whose assist took him to 52 in the Premier League for United, the fifth-most for the club, echoed the sentiment of Maguire's comments.

"It's always good to win games. We know what these kind of games mean for our club and our fans and also for ourselves where we are right now," Fernandes said.

"We know what it means for the fans and the club to play these rivalries. We wanted to do it because it is a long time since the club won at Anfield.

"It is very important so I am very happy to do it today. We knew that we had to win our duels. In the first ten minutes we knew they would try to start the game very strong.

"Also in the first half we understood that they were under pressure when they had time on the ball, the fans were putting them in a difficult position for them to play quicker.

"We wanted to slow their game and we knew that would give massive spaces around the middle. In the second half we could have played a little bit more on the ball."
