Wrexham 3-2 Coventry City: Moore hat-trick condemns Lampard's leaders to first defeat

Kieffer Moore was the hat-trick hero as Wrexham stunned Championship leaders Coventry City, inflicting their first defeat of the campaign.

Coventry City's unbeaten start to the Championship season was brought crashing to a halt by Kieffer Moore, whose hat-trick guided Wrexham to a 3-2 win on Friday.

Frank Lampard's visitors had an opportunity to pull six points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough – and eight ahead of Millwall in third – at the Racecourse Ground.

It looked like they would do exactly that when Ephron Mason-Clark met Tatsuhiro Sakamoto's lofted pass with a fine first-time finish beyond Arthur Okonkwo in the 22nd minute.

But Moore flipped the game on its head in the second half, with all three of his goals assisted by Josh Windass.

He slid Windass' right-wing cross home on the hour to equalise, then nodded a similar delivery in at the back post to complete the turnaround nine minutes later.

Windass supplied a clever reverse pass to tee up Moore's hat-trick goal in the 83rd minute, and though Sakamoto's rasping, left-footed effort ensured a nervy finale, Wrexham held on.

They sit 11th in the table, two points adrift of the play-off places, having only lost one of their last seven league games (three wins, three draws).

Data Debrief: Moore ends seven-year hat-trick wait

Moore turned the game in Wrexham's favour with his hat-trick, which came over seven years after his previous hat-trick in English football.

His only previous trebles in English football came for Rotherham United versus Southend in August 2017 and for Barnsley against Rochdale in August 2018, both in League One.

Only Brandon Thomas-Asante (nine goals) and Haji Wright (eight) have now outscored Moore in the Championship this season, with the Wales striker on seven goals.

Windass, meanwhile, assisted three goals in a single game for the very first time in his career, having previously provided two assists in three different matches.
