Amorim appointment has been a 'disaster', claims Carragher

Jamie Carragher has offered his take on the ongoing criticism around under-pressure Ruben Amorim, calling for Manchester United to cut ties.

Jamie Carragher has branded Ruben Amorim’s spell at Manchester United a failure for both head coach and club, suggesting it is time for both sides to part ways.

Speaking on Monday Night Football after United’s 3-1 loss to Brentford — a result that leaves them 14th in the Premier League with 34 points from Amorim’s 33 matches — Carragher questioned why the Portuguese boss remains in charge.

The Red Devils finished in their lowest league position of the Premier League era last term, as Amorim, who joined from Sporting CP in November 2024, guided them to a 15th- place finish.

Since Amorim took over in November 2024, United have conceded the opening goal in more Premier League matches (21) than any other team.

"This has been a disaster for Manchester United but also for Ruben Amorim," Carragher said.

"What he did at Sporting Lisbon was fantastic. He looked like the next big thing as a manager. But bringing a manager like that in with the system he plays I don't think ever suited a club like Manchester United with the traditions at Manchester United.

"The quicker they make the decision on the manager the better for everybody because like I said it has been a disaster for the club and the manager.

"We are just waiting for the inevitable, unfortunately, because you don't want people to lose their jobs. But this has to end as quickly as possible."

Despite the club investing £200m on attacking signings Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko in the summer, Carragher maintained that the group could still be moulded into a competitive side under a manager with an alternative approach.

"The only positive for Manchester United is that they have not gone all in on his system. They have gone all in in terms of giving him money to spend but they have not bought lots of centre-backs and lots of wing-backs," Carragher added.

"The players they have brought in could easily be flipped into a back four with Bruno Fernandes as a number 10, Mbeumo on the right wing, Cunha on the left, Sesko up front and I think a competent Manchester United manager could get that team into the European places or certainly be fighting for them."
