Nick Woltemade marked his Newcastle United debut with the winning goal against Wolves, and he impressed one Magpies legend in particular.

Nick Woltemade revelled in the praise of Newcastle United "legend" Alan Shearer, after marking his Magpies debut with a goal.

The Germany forward became the club's record signing when he arrived from Bundesliga side Stuttgart at the end of last month for a reported £73.5m (€85m).

And Woltemade hit the ground running in the Premier League, heading the only goal of the game from Jacob Murphy's cross as Newcastle overcame Wolves 1-0 at St James' Park.

Securing a first win of the season for Eddie Howe's side, the 23-year-old became only the third German player to score on his Premier League debut, after Jurgen Klinsmann and Ilkay Gundogan.

Shearer took to X to say: "What a cross and an even better header", and Woltemade was thrilled by Newcastle's all-time leading scorer's comment.

"Of course, he's the legend. He scored a lot of goals and, of course, I'm happy about it," he said.

"I worked a lot on it in the last weeks, the last months and the last year. With my height, I guess you have to. You can get more goals if you can have a good header.

"A header always feels good as a striker, especially if you work on it every week, so I was just happy when the ball was going in."

Next up for Newcastle is a mouth-watering clash with Barcelona on Thursday, as the club mark their return to the Champions League.

Woltemade hopes to build on his promising start to life with the Magpies and is relishing the opportunity to demonstrate his credentials on Europe's biggest stage.

"It's my first Champions League game at St James' Park against Barcelona. I guess it can't be better, so I'm really looking forward to it," he added.

"I want to keep going and try my best every game, and if then the goals come. Of course, I'm really happy about it."
