Newcastle skipper Guimaraes rues 'unacceptable' Spurs equaliser

No Premier League side has dropped more points from winning positions this season than Newcastle United, who were denied at the death.

Bruno Guimaraes acknowledged it was "unacceptable" for Newcastle United to concede a last-gasp equaliser in Tuesday's 2-2 draw with Tottenham.

Eddie Howe's side were denied all three points in the fifth minute of stoppage time at St James' Park, as Cristian Romero's acrobatic effort rescued a point for the visitors.

Only Leeds United (six) have conceded more Premier League goals in the 90th minute or later than Newcastle (five) this season, while three of those goals have been result-altering.

Indeed, Spurs' equaliser follows late winners they let in against Liverpool and Arsenal, leaving Guimaraes and his team-mates incredibly frustrated.

"It's tough to say about the game," the Magpies skipper, who scored the game's opening goal after coming on as a half-time substitute, told Sky Sports.

"We are leaving here today very unhappy. The ball was bouncing in the box and nobody was there to take the ball away, including myself.

"The feeling right now is very negative, but we have to turn things around. It is unacceptable for us to concede again at the end of the game.

"I would change everything about my goal to get the three points. I cannot leave happy today.

"It's not the first time we concede at the end of the game, it is something we have to sort out.

"It is not healthy for us to concede so late. In my view, we were better than them, so we leave here very unhappy tonight."

No team has dropped more points from winning positions in the Premier League than Newcastle this season (11, level with Brentford).

The Magpies led on two occasions on Tuesday, with Romero cancelling out Guimaraes' opener with a diving header.

Anthony Gordon then put the hosts back in front from the penalty spot, only for Romero's acrobatic effort to stun St James' Park into silence.

Head coach Howe was also left to rue the late equaliser, saying: "It wasn't us at our best today, but we battled into a position we wanted.

"But we couldn't defend that corner at the end. It's a disappointing feeling, having worked so hard.

"I thought we were in the ascendancy, we had some good chances, the goal was slow in coming. We battled in the first half, their goalkeeper made a couple of really good saves.

"We weren't at our very best, particularly in the attacking half. We did enough, but needed to defend the corner better."
