After just one point from their first four World Cup qualifying games, Sweden parted ways with Jon Dahl Tomasson on Tuesday.

Sweden have announced the departure of head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson following a disappointing start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Tomasson, who replaced Janne Andersson in February 2024, was relieved of his duties following Sweden's 1-0 defeat to Kosovo on Monday.

That result leaves Sweden at risk of missing back-to-back World Cup finals for just the third time in their history.

Sweden are currently bottom of Group B with one point from their first four matches in qualifying, six adrift of Kosovo in the play-off spot.

The Blagult face Switzerland on November 15 before taking on Slovenia in their final match, knowing maximum points is a must in order to try and clinch second place.

Despite boasting the attacking talent of Liverpool's Alexander Isak and Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres, Sweden have struggled in the final third during qualifying thus far.

Indeed, of sides to have played four or more games in the UEFA section of qualifying, only Luxembourg, Malta, San Marino (all one) and Liechtenstein (0) have scored fewer goals than Sweden's two (level with seven other nations).

"The decision is based on the fact the men's national team has not delivered the results we hoped for," said Swedish Football Association's chairman Simon Astrom in a statement.

"There is still a chance of a play-off in March, and our responsibility is to ensure we have as optimal conditions as possible to be able to reach a World Cup play-off.

"In this, we assess that a new leadership is required in the form of a new coach."

Sweden have lost their last three consecutive games under Tomasson, who became the first foreign head coach to lead the national team since the creation of the role.

The former Blackburn Rovers boss oversaw 18 matches in charge of Sweden in all competitions, winning nine (D2 L7).
