Musiala set for surgery as Bayern confirm fractured fibula

Bayern Munich have confirmed Jamal Musiala sustained a fractured fibula during Saturday's Club World Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Vincent Kompany's team went down 2-0 in the quarter-finals, as the European champions showed their quality.

However, it was a serious injury to Musiala that made the headlines.

Musiala dislocated his ankle in a challenge with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, and the 22-year-old now looks set for a long spell on the sidelines.

Bayern confirmed on Sunday that Musiala had returned to Munich and would undergo surgery.

"This serious injury and the long absence are a real shock for Jamal and all of us," said Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl.

"This hits FC Bayern hard. Everyone knows how immensely important Jamal is for our game and what a central role he plays for our team.

"Furthermore, the human impact is incredibly bitter; we all feel for him: Jamal has just recovered from an injury and will now be out for another long period.

"He will get everything he needs from us. We will support him intensively and be by his side, and we are already looking forward to him being back on the pitch." 

Germany international Musiala played 40 games for Bayern across all competitions last season, as they reclaimed the Bundesliga title.

He contributed to 23 goals, scoring 18 times and laying on five assists, though his 9.6 expected assists suggests he created some quality chances that were not put away by his team-mates.

Musiala completed 100 dribbles, more than any of his club-mates, with Michael Olise ranking second in that metric, on 97.

With Musiala out, and the departures of Thomas Muller and Leory Sane, Bayern will likely be in the market for attacking reinforcements ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

They are interested in Stuttgart's Nick Woltemade, who starred for Germany at the Under-21 Euros, scoring six goals in five games.
