Koeman: Chances of coaching at club level again 'very slim'

After managing 725 matches across all competitions at club level, Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman said it would be difficult to return.

Ronald Koeman believes his chances of coaching another club are "very slim" after citing the benefits of international management.

Koeman's professional coaching career began in 2000 in his homeland with Vitesse before returning to Ajax just under a year later, a club he appeared for 114 times as a player.

He would win four major honours in his four-year stint in Amsterdam, including two Eredivisie titles, before taking the reins at Benfica in 2005.

After just one season in Portugal, he returned to the Netherlands with PSV, leading them to the top-flight crown in 2006-07 before moving to Valencia.

He would come back to his homeland in 2009 for stints with AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord, with two spells in the Premier League, at Southampton and Everton, to follow.

After 479 days at Goodison Park, Koeman replaced Dick Advocaat as the Netherlands' national team boss in 2018, before one final stint in club football with Barcelona in 2020.

The 62-year-old is currently in his second spell with the Oranje, and has won 17 of his 31 games in charge since returning (D5 L9).

Overall, Koeman has managed 725 matches in all competitions at club level, but he has no plans to return to that stage.

"It's not definitive, but the chances of me coaching a club again are very slim," he said.

The ex-Barca boss explained that he enjoys coaching national teams more and prefers the environment around the Dutch squad.

"Everyone comes with a smile. Everyone is happy to see each other again and to be able to speak Dutch again," he said.

The drama of dealing with disgruntled or wantaway players is another factor he doesn't miss, adding: "You don't want to focus on that, because you want to focus on the football aspect."

The Netherlands have a 100% record after two rounds of World Cup qualifiers, with Poland and Lithuania their next opponents in September.
