Women's Super League: Chelsea achieve record unbeaten run but drop more points in title race
Chelsea broke their own record for the longest unbeaten run in the Women's Super League on Sunday, but they did not do so with a victory.
Chelsea extended their unbeaten run in the Women's Super League to a record 34 games but dropped further points in the title race on Sunday, as they drew 1-1 at Liverpool.
Sonia Bompastor's Blues started the day four points adrift of Manchester City, who eased past neighbours Manchester United 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
It initially looked as though they would cut City's lead back to a single point as Alyssa Thompson curled a lovely finish into the far corner nine minutes in, but Beata Olsson capped a devastating Liverpool counter-attack to equalise in the 33rd minute.
Catarina Macario passed up a decent chance shortly before half-time, and though Chelsea did have the ball in the net in the 65th minute, Aggie Beever-Jones was flagged offside when she rounded Liverpool goalkeeper Faye Kirby to tap home.
Beever-Jones then sent a lobbed effort narrowly wide as Chelsea continued to dominate possession, but they were unable to force a winner and had to settle for a second successive draw, having also drawn 1-1 with Arsenal last week.
The Blues are now three points adrift of City and four clear of United, with Arsenal and Tottenham fourth and fifth ahead of their North London derby matchup later on Sunday.
The London City Lionesses are only behind Spurs on goal difference after an impressive 3-1 away win over Aston Villa, with Saki Kumagai scoring twice and Isobel Goodwin also on target.
Kirsty Hanson scored for Villa, who dropped a place to eighth due to Brighton thumping Leicester City 4-1 at the Amex Stadium.
Madison Haley, Maelys Mpome, Marisa Olislagers and Kiko Seike scored for Dario Vidosic's team, as Leicester set a new record for the longest winless run in away WSL games.
The Foxes have gone 21 without a victory on their travels, surpassing Yeovil Town's 20-match run from April 2017 to February 2019.
In the last of Sunday's early kick-offs, West Ham climbed off the bottom of the table – leapfrogging Liverpool – with a 3-1 win over Everton, their first victory of the campaign.
Anouk Denton, Amber Tysiak and Shekiera Martinez struck to give the Irons a comfortable lead by the 54th minute, with Katja Snoeijs' late effort a mere consolation for Everton.
Data Debrief: Chelsea make history, but not with a win
Chelsea have broken their own record for the longest unbeaten run in WSL history, having previously gone 33 games without defeat between 2019 and 2021.
During their current run, which started under Emma Hayes at the end of 2023-24 and includes the entire 2024-25 campaign, the Blues have registered 28 wins and six draws.
However, two of those draws have come in the last two weeks, allowing City to assume control of the title race.
Chelsea were far from their free-flowing best on Merseyside, only just edging the expected goals (xG) battle by 1.15 to 1.07, attempting a mere nine shots and getting one on target – that latter figure is their fewest in a WSL game this season.
