New England Revolution v CF Montreal: Gil desperate to halt hosts' slump

New England Revolution v CF Montreal: Gil desperate to halt hosts' slump

Delen

Two out-of-form sides face off at Gillette Stadium in MLS on Friday, as CF Montreal visit the New England Revolution.

Carles Gil will do his utmost to drag the New England Revolution out of a "difficult moment", as they bid to halt an eight-game winless streak against CF Montreal on Friday.

The Revs sit 11th in the Eastern Conference standings, eight points adrift of the playoff picture, after back-to-back defeats to the New York Red Bulls (5-3) and Orlando City (2-1).

Their last victory came against Montreal – who are rooted to the bottom of the East with 15 points from 24 games – on May 31, by a 3-0 scoreline on the road.

That run has led to speculation concerning the future of head coach Caleb Porter, but playmaker Gil says everybody at the club is desperate to turn things around.

"Obviously, it's a hard moment, a difficult time for everyone," Gil said. "In the end, we're still in a place that we don't want to be.

"It's true that we had some good moments. We lost some games where we did well, but in the end, we finished losing the games.

"I think we need to learn about that, to think about that, because I don't think anyone wants to be in the position we have been in the last two years."

Montreal, meanwhile, are winless in five games in all competitions, losing their last two against the Philadelphia Union (2-1) and the Chicago Fire (2-0).

Club president and chief executive Gabriel Gervais penned an open letter to fans on Wednesday, promising major changes.

"We share your dissatisfaction with the club's results, and it is our responsibility to build a winning team that we can all be proud of," the letter read.

"That is why we have decided to undertake a rebuild and launch a new chapter at CF Montreal. A chapter based on ambition and pride.

"During the upcoming transfer windows, you will see concrete steps, a committed team, and strong initiatives aimed at rebuilding, together, a club that deserves your loyalty."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

New England Revolution – Carles Gil

Gil has the most goals (eight) and assists (four) of any Revs player this campaign. And according to his underlying metrics, that second figure should be even better.

He has created 67 chances this year, with a total value of 8.24 expected assists (xA) – both of those figures are the third-best in the league.

CF Montreal – Prince Owusu

Owusu has scored in each of Montreal's last three regular-season away matches.

He has netted seven of Montreal's 12 away goals in the 2025 regular season, with Dante Sealy (two) the only other player to score more than once away from home for the club.

MATCH PREDICTION – NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION WIN

New England's defeat to Orlando on Saturday was their 16th home loss in all competitions since the start of the 2024 season; only Toronto FC (17) have more among MLS teams.

The Revs totalled just 17 home losses in all competitions over the five years between 2019 and 2023, a figure they could potentially match this week.

New England are also winless in eight straight matches (D2 L6), having only suffered one defeat in 11 matches prior to this run.

But could this meeting with Montreal come at the perfect time?

Only five teams in MLS history have had fewer points through 24 games of a season than Montreal's 15 this year. They accumulated at least 27 points after 24 games in all but one of their first 12 full MLS seasons (17 in 2014).

OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

New England Revolution – 49.8%

CF Montreal – 24.9%

Draw – 25.3%
