Michelle Agyemang suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury while on international duty and has received the support of Renee Slegers.

Arsenal boss Renee Slegers has backed “very strong” Michelle Agyemang to come back even better following her anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The striker, who is on loan at Brighton from the Gunners this season, suffered the injury during England’s international friendly against Australia.

Agyemang has scored once in five Women’s Super League matches for the Seagulls this season, coming off the back of a successful European Championship campaign with the Lionesses in the summer.

Slegers had her own playing career cut short by injuries, having dealt with two ACL injuries of her own.

She believes 19-year-old Agyemang has both the physical and mental strength to come back from the long-term injury.

“When these moments happen, it's horrible because you know that it will keep them away from the game for a long time,” said Slegers.

“It's a long investment for those players to come back again. If you look at Michelle specifically, I think she's been doing so well.

“Her loan at Brighton has been really positive. She's had all those minutes for England, contributing, winning the Euros.

"She was in a really good place, so of course, the timing of this isn't great, it's never a good timing.

“But she's very strong, and we're, of course, very proud to have her and we know that she has the strength to come back. We're going to do everything to support her.

“I've gone through it twice as well, so I know what it does, how much strength it takes both physically, but not the least mentally to come back.

“But again, like I said, [Agyemang] is very strong, she's young, she's a young adult, but she's very, very strong. So she will have the strength to come back and we will do everything we can to support her.”
