Manchester United created a lot of chances against Everton, but failed to convert any of them as they fell to a 1-0 defeat on Monday.

Matthijs de Ligt says Manchester United lacked hunger and lamented the fact that they "played to Everton's strengths" in their 1-0 defeat on Monday.

Everton had Idrissa Gueye sent off in the 13th minute after he hit team-mate Michael Keane in the face, but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall struck the winner just before the half-hour mark.

Despite playing against 10 men for the majority of the game, United failed to break down their visitors, despite having 25 shots, 23 of which came after the red card, and four big chances.

In the second half, the Red Devils came up against a low block, and despite playing 38 crosses overall in the game, they failed to trouble Everton and Jordan Pickford, who made six saves.

And De Ligt rued United's lack of cutting edge as they saw a four-game winning streak on home soil halted.

"It's quite clear. A bad night for us," De Ligt told Sky Sports.

"70 minutes more or less, 11 vs 10, conceded a goal, and not creating many chances. A few, but not enough for a match against 10. A disappointing night.

"From our side, we didn't do enough. Didn't make the runs or bodies into the box. They are strong in the air, so we didn't have the players to score from that. We basically played to their strengths.

"These are the main aspects, but we have to look at ourselves, and it's not good enough. We've been away and trained for a while together. I just think we lacked a bit of urgency in several situations.

"They get punished if you lack this urgency. If you don't score, you lose this game. We lacked this hunger to make a difference on the most important moments."

United were greeted by boos at the final whistle as they lost a Premier League game at Old Trafford after seeing the opposition pick up a red card for the first time ever.

And Amorim, who had overseen a five-game unbeaten run prior to the international break, admitted this result felt like a step back.

"Yes [it feels like a step back]," he told BBC Sport. "Especially in the way we played the game.

"Forget the result. The result is really bad, but I was more concerned by the feeling I had during the game.

"Everyone should play better. We need to do more."
