Tom Heaton will spend the 20th season of his professional career at Old Trafford, having signed a Manchester United contract extension.

Manchester United have awarded third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton a one-year contract extension.

Heaton came through United's academy but a series of loan moves ensured he never made an appearance for the first team before departing on a permanent basis in 2010.

After spells with Cardiff City, Bristol City, Burnley and Aston Villa, Heaton returned to Old Trafford in 2021 and finally made his debut for the Red Devils as a 35-year-old later that year.

Heaton, who has three senior England caps to his name, last appeared in February 2023, in a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.

The 39-year-old is viewed as a leader behind the scenes and will now spend the 20th season of his professional career under Ruben Amorim.

United's director of football Jason Wilcox told the club's website: "Tom's leadership and experience are really important for the group, so we're pleased that he will be part of the squad again next season.

"Tom's mentality and excellent preparation to ensure that he is always ready to perform when called upon makes him the perfect complement to our goalkeeping group."

Heaton will continue to serve as backup to Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir as United approach their first full campaign under Amorim, facing Arsenal in their Premier League opener on August 17.
