Guatemala will feature in the Gold Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1996 after they overcame Canada on penalties in Minneapolis.

Guatemala ended a 29-year wait to play in the Gold Cup semi-finals as they beat Canada 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

Jose Morales was Guatemala's hero at U.S. Bank Stadium, where 10-man Canada missed two of their seven spot-kicks in a nervy shoot-out.

Cyle Larin saw Canada's fifth penalty saved by Kenderson Navarro, yet Jose Pinto slammed over the next spot-kick.

But when Luc De Fougerolles hit the crossbar, Morales ensured Canada were not let off the hook for a second time.

Canada's star man Jonathan David, who is a striker in demand, was not on the pitch for the shoot-out, but had earlier held his nerve from the spot to give his team the lead in the 30th minute.

Jacob Shaffelburg's red card for a second bookable offence in first-half stoppage time enabled Guatemala to get on top, though, and Rubio Rubin restored parity in the 69th minute, though, planting a towering header beyond the reach of Dayne St. Clair, who was ultimately unable to come up with a save to keep Canada in the shoot-out when Morales stepped up.

Next up for Guatemala is a semi-final against either Costa Rica or the United States.

Data Debrief: The long wait ends

Guatemala were one-time champions and twice runners-up at the CONCACAF Championship, which was the Gold Cup's predecessor.

However, since the inaugural Gold Cup in 1991, this is just the second time the Central American nation have reached the last four, and the first time since 1996.

Guatemala made their numerical advantage count following Shaffelburg's dismissal, and they finished with 385 attempted passes, the most of any team in a single match at this edition of the tournament so far. They also had 11 shots to Canada's five, with 0.79 of Les Rouges' 1.24 expected goals coming from David's first-half penalty.
