Inter Miami's shoot-out win over Necaxa in the Leagues Cup came at a cost, with Lionel Messi leaving the pitch early on with an injury.

Inter Miami were able to overcome Lionel Messi's early injury to earn a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Necaxa following a 2-2 draw in normal time at the Leagues Cup.

Messi was replaced in the 11th minute of the contest at Chase Stadium with hamstring discomfort in a game that saw both teams have a man sent off.

Miami, however, were able to get the job done in the Argentine's absence, converting all five of their spot-kicks as Luis Suarez clinched the extra point from 12 yards.

The hosts hit the front a minute after Messi left the field through Telasco Segovia, who curled the ball into the top-right corner after being found by Rodrigo De Paul.

But five minutes after taking the lead, Miami were reduced to 10 men when Maximiliano Falcon was shown a straight red card for a last-man foul on Diber Cambindo.

Necaxa made their man advantage count in the 33rd minute through Tomas Badaloni, but Cristian Calderon evened the numbers on the hour after picking up his second yellow.

Ricardo Monreal thought he had won the game for Necaxa nine minutes from time, only for Jordi Alba's fine header in the third minute of stoppage time to level the scores again.

And Rocco Rios Novo was Miami's hero in the shoot-out, sprawling to his left to keep out Badaloni's effort, with Suarez sealing the win with an emphatic penalty off the crossbar.

Miami's triumph moved them on to five points in the MLS table, one adrift of leaders Portland Timbers, who maintained their perfect start with a 1-0 win over Queretaro.

There was also shoot-out drama at Shell Energy Stadium as 10-man Club America downed Minnesota United 8-7 from the spot after an enthralling 3-3 draw.

Minnesota were pegged back three times in the contest by their opponents, with Nicolas Romero's saved effort from 12 yards proving costly for Eric Ramsay's side.

Tani Oluwaseyi's 16th-minute opener was cancelled out by Michael Boxall's own-goal, only for Bongokuhle Hlongwane to restore Minnesota's lead 14 minutes before the break.

The hosts hit back through Raul Zuniga eight minutes after the restart but saw Igor Lichnovsky sent off in the 62nd minute, 12 minutes after being shown his first yellow card.

Carlos Harvey made the Loons' man advantage count three minutes after Lichnovsky's dismissal, but Club America took the game to penalties after Sebastian Caceres' equaliser in the 90th minute.

Club America scored all eight of their spot-kicks, with Isaias Violante netting the winning penalty to move his team up to ninth in the Liga MX standings.

Data Debrief: De Paul makes an instant impact at Miami

Playing in just his second game for Miami since his loan switch from Atletico Madrid, De Paul has already showcased the quality he will bring to Mascherano's side.

He grabbed two assists against Necaxa, while also ending the game with team-high totals for final third entries (10), chances created (four), passes in the final third (16) and total touches (77), and Miami will need him should Messi's injury be a serious one.

But De Paul was upstaged by compatriot and Minnesota midfielder Joaquin Pereyra, who assisted all three of his team's goals against Club America, taking his overall tally for the season to 11 across all competitions.
