Reinildo's Atletico Madrid exit confirmed ahead of mooted Sunderland switch
Atletico Madrid have confirmed the departure of defender Reinildo, who appears set to join Premier League club Sunderland.
Reinildo appears set to complete a transfer to Sunderland after the defender's departure from Atletico Madrid was confirmed.
Reports emerged over the weekend that Sunderland, who beat Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final to gain promotion to the Premier League last month, were due to sign Reinildo on a free transfer.
The 31-year-old joined Atletico from Lille in 2022, and is capable of playing at left-back or centre-back.
On Monday, Atletico confirmed Reinildo's departure, with a switch to the Stadium of Light now seemingly a formality.
"An example of dedication, courage and heart, of overcoming," Atletico posted on social media.
"Thank you so much for these years defending our colours, Rei! We wish you all the best in your future endeavours."
Reinildo leaves Atletico having played 103 times for Diego Simeone's team across all competitions, including one appearance at the Club World Cup earlier this month.
Sunderland are also expected to sign midfielder Habib Diarra from Ligue 1 club Strasbourg.
Reinildo, meanwhile, was not the only defender who officially left Atletico on Monday, with former Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta seeing his contract come to an end.
