Potter named new Sweden coach after West Ham dismissal
Graham Potter has been unveiled as the new head coach of the Sweden national team, following the sacking of Jon Dahl Tomasson.
Former West Ham and Chelsea boss Graham Potter has been confirmed as the new head coach of Sweden, taking on the position on a short-term basis to revive their faltering World Cup qualifying campaign.
Sweden have been without a manager since Jon Dahl Tomasson was sacked following a 1-0 defeat to Kosovo on October 13 — a result that ended their hopes of automatic qualification.
However, they could still reach the play-offs thanks to their finish in the 2024–25 edition of the Nations League.
Potter returns to management less than a month after being dismissed by West Ham, where he won only six of 23 matches after taking charge in January.
The Hammers’ poor start to the season, with five losses in six games under Potter, left them in the Premier League’s bottom three.
Potter said: "I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world's best leagues during the week.
"My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer."
Potter's first game in charge will be against Switzerland in a World Cup qualifier next month, before making his home bow in another qualifier versus Slovenia.
