Bernardo Silva has been one of Manchester City's outstanding performers this season and has signed a contract extension running until 2025.

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has agreed a new contract running until 2025, the Premier League champions have announced.

Silva joined City for £43.5million in 2017 after playing a starring role in Monaco's title-winning season in Ligue 1, also shining as they knocked out Pep Guardiola's side on the way to the Champions League semi-finals.

The Portugal international's terms at the Etihad Stadium ran until June 2022 but he becomes the latest City player to be tied down to a long-term extension after excelling this term – regularly earning fulsome praise from Guardiola.

"It's an honour to extend my deal with Manchester City,” Silva said. "This club offers everything a player needs to fulfil their ambitions and there's nowhere else I want to be.

"As soon as I heard City wanted me to stay longer, my mind was made up. I love the club, the manager, the players and the fans.

"The style of football we play here excites me, and I am determined to win more trophies. City gives me the best chance of doing that."

Silva made 53 appearances as City won the Premier League and EFL Cup in 2017-18 but has only graduated to the status of being a virtually guaranteed starter during his second season at the club, with his versatility across midfield and attacking roles particularly appealing to Guardiola.

Kevin De Bruyne's injury problems have seen the 24-year-old excel with some tireless performances in a central playmaking role, never more so than when he covered a remarkable 13.7 kilometres in January's 2-1 win over title rivals Liverpool.

Silva scored his ninth goal of the campaign during Tuesday's 7-0 Champions League demolition of Schalke, helping seal a 10-2 aggregate triumph in the last-16 tie.

"Bernardo is an exceptional talent, so offering him a new deal and ensuring he spends the best years of his career with us was a very easy decision," said City's director of football Txiki Begiristain.

"This is the latest example of our commitment to building a young squad of world-class players.

"We are constructing a side that will provide a platform for sustained success. Bernardo fits neatly into our plan."

De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Ederson, Aymeric Laporte and Gabriel Jesus have all penned long-term contract extensions under Guardiola.

However, Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is mulling his options despite City being keen for him to renew beyond the conclusion of his current deal at the end of next season.
