West Ham were twice on course for victory but fell to a disappointing home loss to Aston Villa, much to the chagrin of Nuno Espirto Santo.

Nuno Espirito Santo rued West Ham's inability to control the game as they twice surrendered the lead to lose 3-2 at home to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Mateus Fernandes scored after 30 seconds, and Jarrod Bowen was also on target at the London Stadium, but Morgan Rogers' double proved the difference after an own goal from Konstantinos Mavropanos had initially restored parity.

The Hammers have now failed to win five straight Premier League games, drawing three and losing two, with boss Nuno acknowledging they must improve their defensive frailty.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Nuno – whose side are 18th – said: "We did not control the game, we conceded from a ball that was ours. We scored, but the negative is that we conceded three goals that really punished us.

"They have good players and individual talent that we should have defended against better.

"Today we are sad, and it is painful for us and our fans that we did not win at home. We have to rectify the mistakes that we keep making on our defensive organisation.

"There is a long way to go, and it is up to us to take care of that and get out of this situation."

Defeat here marked the first time West Ham have taken the lead twice in a league game and lost since November 2016, a 3-2 defeat at Tottenham.

Bowen did become the second player to reach 100 Premier League goal involvements for West Ham (61 goals, 39 assists), after Michail Antonio (101), but ultimately it was a day to forget.

Losing goalkeeper Alphonse Areola said: "We are frustrated now. We did lots of good things, but it wasn't enough.

"The result is against us, so we have to work harder to get the points in the next game. We have small details to correct, watch the game again and see what went wrong today.

"We did good things that we have to keep and be stronger now. We wanted the win at home as well on a special day, so let's keep pushing and stick together."
