'Diogo was adored' – Jota's former club Wolves pay tribute after Liverpool forward dies

Diogo Jota's former club Wolves have paid an emotional tribute to the Liverpool forward after he was killed in a car crash.

Jota, who made 131 appearances for Wolves between 2017 and 2020, was described as an "adored" member of the squad who was loved by the club's supporters.

The 28-year-old, along with his brother Andre Silva, was killed in the accident in Spain, which took place shortly after midnight local time on Thursday. 

The incident took place in the Spanish province of Zamora. Jota's brother was 26 and also a professional footballer who played for Portuguese second-tier team Penafiel.

"We are heartbroken," Wolves said in a statement.

"Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves.

"The memories he created will never be forgotten.

"Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother, Andre. You will be truly missed, and always remembered."

Jota spent the last eight years of his career in the Premier League, making 190 appearances in the competition across his spells with Liverpool and Wolves, scoring 63 times and registering 20 assists. 

He helped the Reds to their second Premier League title in 2024-25. 

"Everyone at the Premier League is shocked and devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre," the Premier League said in a statement. 

"Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo’s family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time.

"Football has lost a champion who will be forever missed. We will continue to support our friends and colleagues at the club."

Portugal's women's team have a European Championship game against Spain on Thursday and the FPF had made a request to UEFA that a period of silence be held ahead of kick-off.

And that has been honoured by Europe's football federation, which has also confirmed a period of silence will be held at all the Women's Euro matches played on Thursday and Friday.

A UEFA statement read: "A moment of silence will be observed at all of today's and tomorrow's UEFA Women's EURO 2025 matches in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who tragically passed away today."

Jota made 49 appearances for Portugal, last featuring in his country's Nations League triumph over Spain in the final on June 8. 

He scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists for Portugal.
