Championship: Rampant Coventry stay unbeaten and close gap to Boro with big away win

Middlesbrough's draw on Tuesday allowed Coventry City to respond with victory on Wednesday, closing the gap at the top of the Championship.

Coventry City maintained their unbeaten start to the Championship season and moved to within two points of early leaders Middlesbrough with a big 4-0 win at Millwall.

The top two are the only sides in the division yet to taste defeat through eight matches, but after Boro could only draw at home to Stoke City on Tuesday, Coventry closed in 24 hours later.

Already comfortably the leading scorers in the Championship, Frank Lampard's men took the opportunity to further improve their goal difference after strikes from Haji Wright in either half had put them in control.

Substitutes Ellis Simms and Kaine Kesler-Hayden completed the scoring in the final 10 minutes as Coventry's momentum continues to build ahead of a trip to strugglers Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

If Coventry slip up there, West Brom could have the opportunity to move into the automatic promotion places after they also won away from home on Wednesday.

Josh Maja scored the only goal of the game as the Baggies edged past Norwich City 1-0 in the only other fixture to produce a winner.

Elsewhere, Portsmouth fought back to a 2-2 draw against Watford thanks to Adrian Segecic, while QPR and Oxford United were goalless.

Oxford at least moved out of the bottom three with their point.

Not only are Coventry the highest scorers as a team, they have the Championship's top marksman leading their attack.

Wright moved on to seven goals for the season with his double, scoring with his only two shots against Millwall.

Both were defined by Opta as 'big' chances – among five Coventry created in this match – with Wright's team-mates continuing to put the ball on a plate for him.

With that service, the forward's career-best tally of 16 from the 2023-24 season could soon be in his sights.
