Nico Williams committed the next 10 years of his career to Athletic Bilbao, and he has big hopes for what they can do in the future.

Nico Williams says he wants to "continue making history" at Athletic Bilbao after signing a 10-year contract with the club.

It looked like Williams was set to join Barcelona, whose sporting director, Deco, had confirmed their interest, though Bilbao questioned if they would be able to afford the transfer, given Barca's financial problems.

After the transfer fell through, Williams penned a new contract to run until 2035, an eight-year extension on his previous deal, which was due to expire in 2027.

The left winger, who played a key role as Spain won their record-breaking fourth European Championship in 2024, registered 18 goal involvements in all competitions last season (11 goals, seven assists).

Only Oihan Sancet and his brother, Inaki (both 20), recorded more goal involvements in 2024-25. Williams also created the most chances for Bilbao (70).

Williams also played a pivotal role in helping Athletic secure a Champions League place last term, and he is excited about what the club can achieve going forward.

"I think we have a very long season ahead of us," he said. "We have very ambitious titles like the Champions League, which everyone would like to play in.

"What could be better than doing it with the club of my life? I would like to continue making history here at San Mames, with the fans, with my family, and with a lot of enthusiasm."

His decision to stay means Williams will continue playing alongside Inaki, who will captain Bilbao this season.

"We've both always dreamed of this moment," Williams added. "My brother is a role model for everyone, especially for me.

"I think he's the best person to be captain, and I can't wait to see him wearing the armband for a long time."

Athletic will begin their 2025-26 campaign at home against Sevilla on August 17.
