Bournemouth continued their flying start to the Premier League season on Sunday, with Marcus Tavernier scoring directly from a corner.

Marcus Tavernier acknowledged it was "a big surprise" after he scored directly from a corner during Bournemouth's victory over Nottingham Forest.

Andoni Iraola's side climbed to second place in the Premier League following a routine 2-0 win in Sean Dyche's first league game in charge of the visitors.

Tavernier broke the deadlock in bizarre fashion, scoring the first Premier League goal directly from a corner since Matheus Cunha did so for Wolves against Manchester United last December.

It came to the surprise of everyone inside the Vitality Stadium, including the winger himself.

"I don't think I've ever done that before!" he laughed. "It was a great job from Tyler [Adams] off the ball to block, and somehow it's gone in.

"We work on set-pieces every week because they're so important. We focus on different target areas – and to be honest, that one wasn't even in the right area!

"From where I was, I didn't know if someone had touched it, but the lads came running over to me, and it was a big surprise!"

The Cherries took their tally for the season to 18 points after nine games, representing their best start to a top-flight campaign.

"I feel like we've carried on from last season," Tavernier added. "We've started strongly and that's credit to everyone in the building. You can see that in our performances and results.

"Today, we [controlled things] really well and kept a clean sheet against a quality side. They're not in Europe for no reason, and it's a superb win. We take it game-by-game, and don't get carried away."

Meanwhile, Dyche suffered his first defeat since replacing Ange Postecoglou at Forest earlier this week, having started his reign with victory over Porto in the Europa League.

And the Tricky Trees boss conceded his new side, who remain 18th in the table with just five points to their tally, were well off the pace against Bournemouth.

"It's the old adage of 'after the Lord Mayor's Show'. We came to a side who are number one in the Premier League for physicality – and they showed it," he said. "I don't think we can [match that] yet.

"[The players] have been excellent, absorbing all the information, but we were miles off in the first half. There's a lot of work to be done.

"There were too many backwards and sideways passes. When everyone's a bit tight, they get a bit cagey – nobody wants to make a mistake.

"I didn't come here naively – the league table does tell a story. I didn't think there wasn't work to be done, but the first half showed it.

"If we had gone into half-time at 0-0 and done the minimum today, it gives us a chance. I'm not questioning other managers, but we've only got so many opportunities [to enforce change].
