Most of the top clubs in the Premier League have strengthened their squad ahead of the 2019/20 season. Manchester City signed Angelino, Rodri and Joao Cancelo while Arsenal added Nicolas Pepe, Dani Ceballos, David Luiz and Kieran Tierney to their ranks.

Manchester United acquired the services of Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire in a world record deal while Tottenham signed Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso to reinforce their midfield. They also got Ryan Sessegnon as a cover for the left-back spot.

However, Champions League winners Liverpool have remained inactive in the transfer window and have added just one senior team outfield player to their ranks – 17-year-old Sepp van der Berg. They did sign Spanish shotstopper Adrian to cover for Simon Mignolet who has left the club.

While it is evident that Jurgen Klopp believes his squad is complete and ready to challenge for titles, the apparent lack of depth could come back to haunt him.

The Reds have a strong starting line-up with extremely talented players occupying their respective positions. A strong XI is crucial to winning cup competitions like the Premier League and Champions League. The fortune of the team in these competitions is dependent purely over the handful of games played largely towards the end of the season.

However, a well-rounded squad is crucial to compete in the league and challenge for the other cups simultaneously. The most consistent team throughout the tournament is rewarded with the league title and achieving this objective without strengthening the squad will be a tough challenge for Liverpool.

Daniel Sturridge was released by the club. Nathaniel Clyne is currently injured while Naby Keita is yet to find his feet.

James Milner (33) is not getting any younger and the lack of a proper left-back cover for Andy Robertson is an issue. It’s clear that Klopp could definitely have done better in adding depth to his midfield.

With a UEFA Super Cup match against Chelsea looming large, Klopp might feel that the Reds could certainly have been more active in the transfer market.
