Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich: Schjelderup strike seals top spot

Andreas Schjelderup's goal and a string of saves from Anatolii Trubin helped Benfica upset Bayern Munich and advance as Group C winners.

Bayern Munich finished second in Group C at the Club World Cup, as Benfica leapfrogged them into top spot with a 1-0 win in Charlotte.

Having thrashed Auckland City 10-0 and beaten Boca Juniors 2-1 in their opening two matches, Bayern were already assured of a last-16 place but needed a point to confirm top spot.

Benfica, meanwhile, needed a result to guarantee qualification ahead of Boca Juniors, and after Andreas Schjelderup put them ahead, goalkeeper Anatolii Trubin made several excellent saves to keep the Bundesliga champions out.

After Manuel Neuer denied Angel Di Maria with a fine early stop, Benfica took the lead in the 13th minute. A flowing move culminated in Fredrik Aursnes crossing low from the right, allowing Schjelderup to sweep home.

Bayern improved massively after half-time, but Leroy Sane was denied by Trubin when clean through on goal, while Joshua Kimmich's low drive was disallowed due to Harry Kane blocking the goalkeeper's line of sight from an offside position.

As Bayern dialled up the pressure, Trubin brilliantly blocked Aleksandar Pavlovic's close-range effort in the 75th minute, though there was better to come from the Ukrainian.

He made himself big to deny Sane from another one-on-one duel with four minutes of the 90 remaining, while Kane passed up Bayern's final chance in the eighth and final minute of stoppage time.

Data Debrief: Benfica's Bayern hoodoo halted

Benfica's supporters had waited a long time to see their side get one over on Bayern, teeing up a last-16 meeting with the Group D runners-up – potentially Chelsea.

The Lisbon giants had failed to beat Bayern in any of the clubs' previous 13 meetings, all in major European competitions. They lost 10 of those matches while conceding 36 goals.

However, a strong start proved decisive for Bruno Lage's team, who matched Bayern's four first-half shots but hit the target on three occasions, while their opponents failed to do so once.

Bayern were utterly dominant after half-time, but four saves from Trubin and some costly misses from Sane – who racked up 1.18 expected goals (xG) – ensured it counted for nought.
